The Central Government has promised to pay a Rs 2.5 lakh incentive for each inter-caste marriage in which a dalit takes part. Prior to this decision, this scheme was intended for couples with an annual income of less than Rs. 5 lakh per annum. However, in order to encourage inter-caste marriages, including those of dalits, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has decided to make the plan available to anyone, regardless of income. According to the latest revisions to the scheme, couples who have married in the other caste, one of whom is a dalit, can receive a one-time incentive of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Also, many states have similar schemes without a limit on income. The scheme began with the purpose of assisting and supporting couples in the early stages of their marriage who have taken a courageous step by shattering the social stigma.

In 2006, the Rajasthan government was the first to offer rewards to couples who ignored societal differences through the Dr. Savita Ben Ambedkar Inter-caste Marriage Scheme. Initially, the incentive provided was Rs 50000, which has now reached an amount of Rs 2 lakh.

However, the Rajasthan government then imposed a few criteria in order to reduce the rise in the number of false marriages and divorces. The government stipulated that the pair would only be entitled to half of the incentive money, with the remainder being stored in a fixed deposit and available for claim after just 8 years of marriage.

To qualify for the incentive, the central government's initiatives require that the marriage be the first for both parties, that they register their marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act, and that the application be filed within a year of the marriage. In addition, the couple must provide their Aadhaar numbers as well as information on their Aadhar-linked joint bank account.

Eligibility Criteria-

  • One of the spouses must be from a scheduled caste and the other from a general caste.

  • The marriage is valid and must be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955.

  • In case of second marriage no incentive shall be provided.

  • The proposal shall be valid if submitted within one year after marriage.

  • If an error is found on the application form, the responsible authorities may take appropriate legal action.

Incentive provided-

  • A lawful inter-caste marriage would earn Rs 2.5 lakhs. The qualified couple would receive 1.50 lakhs in their joint account, with the remaining funds maintained in a three-year fixed deposit.

  • The scheme started on a trial basis for a period of 2 years starting in 2014. However, it was regulated after the year 2015.

Finally, the scheme's principal goal is to recognize and financially support the couple's courageous decision to marry outside their caste. It should be clarified that the scheme is not part of an employment scheme for generating employment or alleviating poverty.
